Fit & Grit Bike Ride across Gaspe

We met Chris Koch at the CEA Conference in Quebec City in November. Chris blew us away with his inspirational story and incredibly positive outlook on life.

Please check out his amazing story here…

We left that event wanting to take action. Fitness and learning complement each other, but both require guts when things get rough. And let’s face it, things do get rough. How could we get this important message to our 1200 Eastern Shores Students across such a vast geographical territory?

Our consultants left that conference looking for ideas to bring together fitness and school perseverance for our students in the vast Eastern Shores Region of Quebec.

We came up with the Fit&Grit concept to have our students cycle across the Eastern Shores School Board territory. We wanted to raise awareness about fitness (FIT) and the importance of never quitting in school or in life (GRIT).

Well here we are… after months of hard work in the gym, on the road, and of course…In the classroom! Today is our Mechanical Bike preparation day before we set off for day-1 of the ride tomorrow.

Students representing various ESSB communities will ride together as a group, to bring our message far and wide.

Remember, we issued a fitness challenge to all 1200 student across the School Board? Students had 3 months to exercise (in time and distance) a combined total of 40,000km. The circumference of planet Earth! Well, you crushed it and even surpassed the goal. I couldn’t even compile the final totals once we smashed the target. By completing this challenge you proved that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. You also encouraged and motivated our ESSB team of 17 cyclists who will ride tomorrow.

So, now it’s time for the cyclists to climb on the shoulders of all of those students who supported us all year.

The route will take us across a very windy and hilly Gaspe peninsula coastline. It’s a daunting challenge, and we are feeling the butterflies as the start date approaches.

These cyclists would appreciate your support on the journey.
