Learning Scenario

English territories in North America, 1763 (LPBSB)

Image
In 1763, the distribution of territory in North America changed significantly.

After the Seven Years War (1756 - 1763) between England and France, England conquered New France and took over its territory. The Royal Proclamation of 1763 brought about several changes to New France and North America.

This mapping task shared by LBPSB consultant David Emory asks students to trace out the new territories, and to consider key questions like, "Why do you think the English wanted to assimilate the French Canadians?" and "Why were the English colonies to the south upset that lands were reserved for the First Nations peoples?"

As a final integration task, students are asked to consider the new laws from the point of view of a French Canadian farmers.
